Verbs (part 2)

Since I learned the most basic of basics in the part one of verbs last week, I’ll be moving on to the tenses this week.

Past tense verbs

ました is the first conjugation of ます。ました replaces ます when the verb is past tense (positive.) It’s like replacing です with ではありません or じゃありません.

• にほんごをはなします。 ー＞　I speak Japanese
• にほんごをはなしました。 ー＞ I spoke Japanese

Negative Verbs

To make a verb negative instead of using ます you use ません。This means that this sentence “にほんごをはなします” would become this “にほんごをはなしません“

Past tense Negative

To make a verb negative instead of using ます you use ませんでした。This means that this sentence “にほんごをはなします” would become this “にほんごをはなしませんでした“
